ASUKA III Float-out celebrated

On Saturday 18th January 2025 the next important milestone in the build of ASUKA III by NYK Cruises was celebrated. The ship undocked from the Meyer Werft shed for the first time and is now moored at the fitting-out pier in the shipyard harbour. During the manoeuvre, the cruise ship also received its funnel.

The SMC Design team of Oliver Raine, Senior Designer/Project Manager, and Paola Guadagnin, Onsite Inspection Manager, proudly attended the ceremony and party with NYK Cruises and Meyer Werft. They were very grateful to be invited to attend this special day for everyone involved on the project.

ASUKA III is in the final stages of a 5-year project, SMC Design are delighted to be involved in the interior design, branding, artwork and FF&E for NYK Cruises’ first ship in more than 30 years.

ASUKA III Design

A core part of the design brief was to make guests feel at home anywhere on the ship. From the moment they step on board, Asuka III’s unique architecture is designed to create an oasis of relaxation and social interaction.

“Each space has a unique identity: the finishes may be rich and atmospheric in the Al Mare restaurant, dramatic and elegant in a certain café, yet light and cosy in the books area, but key motifs are reflected throughout all areas of the residential-style design. Wherever you are, the ribbed detailing, flowing asymmetric forms and inviting lighting carry through – they’re part of the shared language of the ship, and are designed to feel warm, residential and cohesive. It's a vibe that guides us in every design aspect, from the architecture to the wayfinding and signage,” Oliver explained.
With a length of 230 metres and a beam of 29.8 metres, ASUKA III will offer space for approximately 740 passengers. The approx. 52,200 GT ship will enter service in Japan around the summer of 2025.
