A cruise ship’s profile takes precedent at the early stages of the design process. The brief for Spirit of Discovery was to create a classic cruise liner look whilst offering ample exterior space to both guests and crew. To achieve this, bold and recognisable colours were used on the ships hull and funnel and close detail was given to the design of smaller details such as railings and catwalks. The aft end of the ship is particularly distinctive with its curved railings following the steel arc of each deck, all with access to passenger areas inside. The Promenade Deck and Sun Deck then offers the guests great views inboard and outboard whilst allowing them to complete a full walk around of the decks.

THE TERRACE

Situated at the aft end of the walk-around promenade on Deck 6 is The Terrace, a secluded courtyard space where guests can enjoy a break and the self-service juice bar. There is also a staircase that leads guests back up to Deck 7, for those preferring to enjoy the sun and uninterrupted views out to sea.

SUN DECK

The Sun Deck provides guests with an open roaming space to bask in the sunshine. Alternatively guests can relax in the shade under canopies, or make their way to the turfed area to enjoy a spot of outdoor games. All outdoor areas have deck crew on hand from nearby pantries to serve refreshments at the guests request.

THE VERANDAH

Sitting at the aft end of the ship is The Verandah, an outside bar and grill venue for guests to soak up the sun whilst taking in the ocean view. Set in the traditional ship architecture setting of teak effect flooring and painted steel balustrades, guests can also find themselves in this area for sail away parties

THE OBSERVATION DECK

At the very top of the ship is the Observation Deck. Classically the best venue for sun lounging, it is also connected via a stairway to The Gym below. The area can also be used as a location for yoga, tai chi and other morning rituals. This area also benefits from shaded canopy areas, and also has a direct connection back to beginning of the ship via the main stairwell and lifts. To the aft end is The Courts, allowing guest to partake in short tennis, badminton or basketball in an enclosed netted environment. When not in guest use, the area is available to crew.
